Village of Johnsburg
Founded
in 1991, the Village of Johnsburg is now home to more than
6,000 people, residents drawn to the region's unrivaled blend
of year-round recreation, old-fashioned small-town charm and
contemporary convenience. It's a place where country settings
and glittering lakes are right down the road from good schools
and Metra trains. Perhaps foremost among Johnsburg's many
pleasures are its open green spaces and great recreation.
Here, forty acres of parkland come complete with two major
facilities boasting baseball, softball and soccer fields;
picnic areas and paths for walking and jogging; basketball
courts and well-equipped playgrounds. More than 3.5 miles
of waterfront on the Fox River and Chain O' Lakes give Johnsburg
residents prime access to the waterways for boating and fishing.
They even enjoy a free boat launch facility courtesy of the
Village. Just beyond Johnsburg, the McHenry
County Conservation District provides four seasons of fun
on 18,000 acres of open land, including 19 conservation areas.
From hiking, biking and horseback riding to cross-country
skiing, sledding and so much more, there's an outlet for every
interest. Vacation-style recreation continues at Chain O'
Lakes State Park, highlighted by four vast trail systems and
almost 6,500 acres of water, as well as at Moraine Hills State
Park, a bird-watcher's paradise that's home to many of this
region's rarest plant species.
When it's time for school, Johnsburg District 12 has an outstanding
selection, including Ringwood, James C. Bush Elementary, Johnsburg
Jr. High and Johnsburg High. Happily, recent additions to
area schools have kept pace with community growth while retaining
the personal touch that's the hallmark of a small school district.
Excellent private school programs are available at St. John's
Catholic Church, in Johnsburg, and at Marion High School,
in Woodstock.
As for higher education, McHenry County College serves more
than 30,000 students a year, offering a comprehensive choice
of courses that can be transferred to a four-year school.
Continuing education courses and career programs are also
popular.
As for life's necessities, local shopping is sensational,
the restaurants terrific, including a number of riverfront
establishments in the immediate area. Even travel is easy.
Commuters and visitors can conveniently reach Chicago via
the McHenry or Fox Lake Metra stations. Of course, the best
part of leaving Johnsburg, is coming home.
